1991 Cadillac Sedan Deville won't start?

It used to be a hit and miss kind of thing, now it won't start at all. Battery is not an issue. Rumor has it these cars are notorious for this, but nothing tried has worked. Changed relay for security system, ignition switch and everything. (All the cheapest ways to trouble shoot...) Anyone have this before and can suggest how to fix it?1991 Cadillac Sedan Deville won%26039;t start?
Well if it is cranking (trying to start) then check for spark with a timing light, old sparkplug that is grounded, etc,

if there is no spark then check the output from the crank Position Sensor (a GM Problem), check for 12V at the coils, and check that Ignition Relay (swap with a known good) It may be your ECU in which case I would get a replacement at a junkyard

If you have spark then check the fuel pressure, and the fuel pump fuse and relay, if the pressure is fine make sure that the injectors are pulsing a Volt-Ohm Meter will show you if there is power to the injectors. Visually make sure the injectors are not leaking. If the injectors are not getting any voltage then it could be the ECU.

If the car will not crank, check the ignition switch, check that the cables to the starter are good, and see if you have 12 V at the starter. Test the starter motor. If you have an aftermarket alarm check that the alarm system is getting power and functioning correctly1991 Cadillac Sedan Deville won%26039;t start?
Sounds like it jumped time. Check that next, if not that check your fuel pump. Good luck.1991 Cadillac Sedan Deville won%26039;t start?
My Buick did that. What was wrong was the crankshaft postioning sensor. Since then it was fine. My brothers 94 Olds did the same thing. New sensor. No problem.

I don't know for sure what or where one is but I know it costs me $75.00 at the garage. And, to me, it was money well spent. I think it was an early 90 GMC problem.1991 Cadillac Sedan Deville won%26039;t start?
You might have a bad starter/alternator or maybe some of the wires could be lose.1991 Cadillac Sedan Deville won%26039;t start?
I bought a new 91 caddy back in 91 and had the starter solonoid replaced . sometimes car would be fine and the next time it would not do anything .

At-mt swap on civic key is being held in ignition cylinder, WHY?

95 civic was originally an automatic but i converted it to manual trans. I changed the brake light switch then after checking my bulbs, the key wouldn't come out of the ignition. I disconnected the battery then the key was released and I was able to take it out.....HOW do i fix this??At-mt swap on civic key is being held in ignition cylinder, WHY?
I don't know the wiring on that, but the key cylinder does not believe the car is in Park so it does not release the key.

u need a puller 4 the steering wheel,a variety of small torque bits, investing in a chilton or haynes book would b your best bet 4 every car is slightly different in removal, there is also another tool that may need required 2 compress unit back on 2 put snap retaining rings back on or steering wheel will b wobbly, not a very hard job,but pay attention of order of parts removed, have proper tools.

97 Chev 5.7 ltr starts & runs then shuts down?

The battery died from repeated start %26amp; quick shutdown. A few days after reading posts, I installed a new dealer ignition switch with wire harness. I didn't change the ignition cylinder. I installed a new battery and the vehicle started fine. I started %26amp; shut it down several times to check if it was operating correctly. Alternator appeared to be charging properly. Vehicle was performing normally. After 1/2 hour I shut it down to button up the covers and when I finished the job, it started doing the same thing again. The only adjustment I made was to snap on the plastic ignition cylinder butterfly over the key insert. Does the ignition cylinder have some electrical component that controls spark %26amp; fuel? It will rev up if you press the gas pedal then it dies like the spark is being cut out. Could there be some theft deterent system malfunction at work? Can I bypass this some how? Is there an electrical component to change?

Any ideas?97 Chev 5.7 ltr starts %26amp; runs then shuts down?
This is probably a vortec 350 small block-they are great engines, but the electronics can be maddening-here is a hint-make sure this is not a fuel pressure related problem, rule that out by checking the pressure after it dies on the down side of the fuel filter. If that is ok, then use an obd tester to see if the system is giving any trouble codes. If nothing, get it to a reputable shop. The only way to alter the theft deterrent system is to reprogram the computer.97 Chev 5.7 ltr starts %26amp; runs then shuts down?

Try cleaning the resistor on the key. Sometimes when they get dirty it can cause stupid problems like this because of the theft system.

88 toyota 4 wheel drive removing the ignition key switch? and how?

put new starter on 88 4 wheel drive truck , when i turn the key to start i get a click like no power to the starter, i have have changed the starter, im woundering if it might be in the key switch sending power to the starter ? and are the anything i need to check ? how do you remove the key switch? someone told me there is a pin you push in. havent found it any help will be thankfull,,,,,,,,,,,88 toyota 4 wheel drive removing the ignition key switch? and how?
the key switch (ignition switch) only sends a small amount of power to the solenoid and the solenoid makes the connection from the battery cable to the starter because the small wires coming from your ignition switch can not carry enough power to run your starter your problem is probably your solenoid or you have corroded battery cables if so clean them the ground or positive cable could also be loose at either end

I'm assuming you have already made sure your battery has a full charge88 toyota 4 wheel drive removing the ignition key switch? and how?
How do you KNOW the %26quot;new %26quot; starter is good? Key sounds OK! Charge your battery, clean your battery terminals AND posts with a wire brush. make sure all the BIG connections are clean and firm-tight enough, not overdone. repeat on the starter motor. Make sure the Earth cable goes to the chassis AND the motor and that these points are clean and firm. If battery %26gt;3yrs old, or left unused too long, may be shot. when you replace it, use Cadmium Sulphite solution in the new one to retard sulphation and failure. It works!!! If all else fails, short out the 2 big bolts to each other only on the stater solenoid with the forks of an old spanner, and it should spark %26amp; spin fast. If not, it's battery or starter. Starters are easy to recondition, as are alternators. The usual parts (bearings %26amp; brushes) are very cheap.

real easy, if you know what you are doing or looking for. My guess is you have no spark. start from the starter relay to the ballast resitor and on if you can find them get a qualified mechanic to look aat it before you thow parts and money at it and the truck still wont startHow hard would it be to change the following on a 1988%26039; jeep wranlger 4.2 6cyl...?
    fairly easy..

it's an inline 6, the coil is 3minute swap, ignition system, meaning plugs and wires.. pretty easy to change those.

ignition switch is under dashboard, probably mounted to steering column on the topside.

  • Need an idea on estimate for an old Honda CB750, I think it is an 82 or 83.?

Thinking about making an offer on the bike, it needs work. First off it has no key so I imagine I would have to change out the ignition switch. It only has 4K miles on it. Tires are good. Seat is damaged, so I'm wondering how expensive it would be to have someone rebuild the seat. I cant imagine it has too many mechanical problems, its been garaged since 1987. I imagine it is an 82 or 83 since i looked up the years it was made. Should I bring a bike mechanic to see it first? I was thinking about offering up 500 bucks for it and hope that with another thousand I could get it running. Sound reasonable? Hoping to hear from maybe some bike mechanics or someone real knowledgeable with bikes. Thanks.Need an idea on estimate for an old Honda CB750, I think it is an 82 or 83.?
Bear in mind that, at best, this will be a break-even project. The rule of thumb with restoring bikes is to start out with the best example you can afford/find. That is the first step in keeping costs under control. There are many issues to think about here:

-You may not need to change the ignition lock. A Honda dealer may be able to get you a key using the VIN.

-Tires more than 5 years old are no good. Period. At its age, ALL other rubber parts are suspect, too. In particular, the intake rubbers (between the carbs and intake manifolds) are likely to be cracked.

-You might consider an aftermarket seat, such as a Corbin or Sargent. I have a Corbin on mine: The stock seat put my legs to sleep.

-Apart from the battery, the electrical system may be fine, but it would be wise to check all the electrical connectors, and there are many.

-The fuel system may need a huge amount of work. Hopefully, it was stored with no fuel in the carbs. Otherwise, they will need a complete rebuild. The gas tank may be rusty. If this isn't rectified, the bike will never run right--rust will plug up the carb jets or cause the float valves to stick.

-Unless well-lubed when stored, all of the cables may need replacement. They may be seized in their sheaths, or close to breaking from rust-through.

-The hydraulic brakes may be seized. Check the master cylinders and all the pistons. At the very least, the brake fluid and hoses must be changed. The fluid is hygroscopic, meaning that it actually attracts water. Get stainless steel braided brake lines made up. They're cheaper and better than stock. I don't think off-the-shelf lines are available anymore.

-Bearings-wheel, steering head, swing arm-should all be okay.

Why have i gone to such length? I own (since new) a pristine 1981 CB750F with just about every mod you can think of, done up as a cafe racer with custom paint and chromed everything. I LOVE these old bikes! And with top-notch suspension and sticky tires it has surprisingly good handling and can lean waaaay over (pegs, pipe and sidestand touch down). I call mine the %26quot;Q-ship%26quot;.Need an idea on estimate for an old Honda CB750, I think it is an 82 or 83.?
Well I wouldn't give more than 500 for it. It's old, and if you have to do any work to it not worth it. Keep you eyes open because you should be able to get something like it that needs nothing for 400-800 dollars...If you have the 500 plus another 1000 to spare, I would look at something newer that needs nothing. You'll be happier trust me.Need an idea on estimate for an old Honda CB750, I think it is an 82 or 83.?
    Garaged?

    GRAB IT!!!!

My '80 cost me $600 in '06 needing work.

For a total cost of $1000 it was on the road.

    Bike, tires, brakes, filters, etc.

Don't worry about changing the switch. Take the switch to a dealership and he can cut you a key from the numbers on the cylinder. That way you don't need two keys to lock up.Need an idea on estimate for an old Honda CB750, I think it is an 82 or 83.?
I think you should check out the link below, it appears to be worth more than 500 bucks. Good luck.Need an idea on estimate for an old Honda CB750, I think it is an 82 or 83.?
You should always be very skeptical of an old bike with too few miles on it. A 26 or 27 year old bike with 4000 miles on it has undoubtedly sat in a garage for years at a stretch, perhaps DECADES at a stretch. There are parts on a bike that wear out faster if not used (actually they -rot- out). It might even run well but you will have one problem after another with it and it will break your heart.

This was an amazing bike in its day, and if you found one that had been all gone through it would be a nice bike to have. You would be taking it to vintage bike meets and getting a lot of attention from old bikers (like me) wherever you stopped.

But understand that you're going to need to do a lot with this bike, and parts are getting hard to find. The seat is easy to replace (you can get a new cover and install it yourself) but that is going to be the least of your problems. Call your local Honda dealer and ask them where you'd find a head gasket for an 82 or 83 CB 750.Need an idea on estimate for an old Honda CB750, I think it is an 82 or 83.?
I have a truck that's been garaged for 15 years. I call it my 1000 dollar truck because every time I go work on it I spend a thousand dollars. I'm assuming you only want this for transportation. If so I would pay 500 for it, but then I have mechanical skills. If you don't have any skills then I wouldn't buy it if I was you. More than likely it was stored with gas in the tank and carbs, so the tank is probably rusted and the carbs will have to be rebuilt. Other things will have to be done also before you even think of trying to start it. If you do decide to buy it then the first think you'll have to buy is a Clymer's repair manual. I have one for every bike I've ever owned if I needed it or not. It's just a good thing to have just in case.

Would a ignition switch cause the key to not turn all the way off?

I have a 2002 malibu, i had the problem with the theft system light blinking, and have been doing the 10-15 minute wait and then it would start ok. Well now i guess i let it go too long and as of last week, the key will not turn all the way off, the car can be turned off but it will not go back that last click to turn off the battery and everything., so basically the radio would stay on if i dont manually turn it off by hitting the button, so my battery dies until about two days ago i got smart and started disconnecting the battery ,haha. Anyway, see i was told that it was most likely the ignition cylinder and would have to be re-programmed and everythingbut i want to know if this could be caused by a bad ignition 'switch', not cylinder, wishfull thinking most likely but i was kinda hoping it would be caused by the switch rather than the cylinder because i can do the switch by myself instead of paying somebody 300 dollars to do the cylinder for me.Its rediculous how much they charge you for little things like that, im sick of this crap, i truly believe that CHEVY themselves should fix crap like that being that they have many faults in there malibu's and knew about most of them. I swear i will never EVER buy another malibu unless i can get a brand new one from like 2008-2009 with a warranty from a dealership, cause then i wont get screwed with a chevy lemon which most people do that buy a little older chevy cars.

I bought this car about 6 or 7 months ago, when i got it it ran good , and didnt notice any light sor anything on the dash.. The next day the engine light, and brake light was on. I live in Maryland and Maryland has one of the strictest inspections in the US of A, no bullsh..t. So anyway, we had to get both front wheel-barons fixed to get the friggin brake light off ok, then come to find out, the engine light is on because the catylic converter is bad. Now the IAT snesor code is coming up on the diagnostic tester. I changed the sensor and didnt take the code off, so now i am gonna have to get the connection to the IAT sensor fixed and that could be bad anywhere on that wire, So prolly another few hundered bucks. We have put appoximately 13-1,400 bucks into this car since we got it. After almost 2 months of driving it we got it through inspeection, i got the light to come off for that at the moment, but afterwards the guy told me my intake-gasket was bad and it would be ok for right now most likely but it would most deff need to be fixed as soon as i could get it fixed. Well i let it go for about another month, maybe a month and a half and by that time, the antifreeze in the excess tank where you pour it in at was completely black like oil, i mean if you stuck your finger in there your finger was black with oil, apparently the oil was leaking into the anitfreeze, which was a good thing because usually the anitfreeze leaks into the oil but it was other way around, if it did do the other thing we would have had a head-gasket go also. Well we had got it fixed and got a great deal from a friend of a friend and payed 400 dollars instead of the usual 700-900. I had to get 2 tires, new battery before we could even drive the first time, but like i said before it seemed great when we first got it, but i also did not know how assinine maryland inspection was either. New windshield-wipers, new hazard switch, one of the door switches still dont work, fixed one of them, had to fix the windshield washer fluid motor thingy underneath the resevoir. Got a new coil-pack cause one of the plugs was rusted and worn down to nothing basically, and a couple little minor things like tale light, shifter internal light bulb, and that was a pain in the *** people , getting to that damn thing, lol. This is just a little summary of what i have gone through with this car since we have had it, but my fiance will not sell the damn thing, grrrrrr.

Anybody with a solution or advice for me on my first question up top would be most appreciated. Any feed-back period would be great, thanks everybody. RJWould a ignition switch cause the key to not turn all the way off?
Now you know why you should always have the vehicle inspected by a qualified mechanic before buying it.

As far as the ignition problem, have you checked the park indicator in the transmission? If it does not fully engage in park, the key will not turn completely off.

Can you remove the key from the ignition? If so, it is an electrical issue, not a mechanical issue.Would a ignition switch cause the key to not turn all the way off?
i have a 03 chevy malibu and my key wont turn all the way off.i my problem was no my inigtion switch it was the shifter it gets stuck so i just lubricated and works good now and my key would go all the way off try that. http://www.sparkys-answers.com/search/label/Chevrolet go down to 05 chevy inpala

Does anyone know how I can reset the theft system on a 1997 grand am gt so I can get the car to start?

System alarm light stays on steady now. I have tried the 10 minute 3xs and it doesn't work. The ignition switch was changed last year when I had the same problem, I am tired of making Pontiac richer. Anyone with suggestions please let me know, I'm open to suggestionsDoes anyone know how I can reset the theft system on a 1997 grand am gt so I can get the car to start?
I have to wait for like 15-20 mins then the light will shut off then try to start it. If that doesn't work you may have to call ur local dealer.Does anyone know how I can reset the theft system on a 1997 grand am gt so I can get the car to start?
Stick the key in the Ignition and try to start, let go of the key as if it did start, the security light should start flashing, If it does, wait about ten minutes, when the security light goes out, turn the ign. off then back on within 5 seconds. You need to do this 3 times but make sure the battery is fully charged and everything else is off.

If this does not work, then you may have another bad ignition switch or broken wire in the switch sensor, a code stored in the PCM keeping it from relearning or even a bad PCM. (computer)

How often does a starter switch on a 2002 alero have to be replaced and do they fail often?

In the past 5 months, my ignition starter switch has gone on my car and the Mechanic tells me that they have no way of telling if or when they will fail, it could last 10 days to 10 years, dont know when they will go. I cant be changing it all the time and was just wondering if that was true and if I will have to change it all the time. How often does a starter switch on a 2002 alero have to be replaced and do they fail often?

There is no way of telling when anything will go out on a car. If you have replaced it more than once in the last 5 mos, first i would recommend checking to see if they are using OEM parts or after market. Second off I would ask the next time for the part and take my car to another shop (reputable). Have them test both switchs and have them check the service bulletins pertaining to the part.

    1989 Thunderbird?

How hard is it to change the ignition starter switch? I can not use the heat, turn signals without jiggeling the key several times and even then it doesn't work at all1989 Thunderbird?
You gotta realize that the switch ain't where you put the key! The switch is located on the top of the steering column well under the dash. Replacement is not too difficult, I will post the %26quot;book%26quot; instructions. There may be other problems with the actuator or linkage to the switch. It may also have become out of adjustment. Check the adjustment per the following instructions. This type of Ford switch is known to %26quot;loosen up%26quot; meaning where te switch slide is held in by bent over tabs, over time it will become loose. New switch should cost under $20.00, Good Luck!

    Disconnect battery ground cable.

Remove steering column lower shroud, then remove four nuts holding column assembly to column mounting bracket.

Remove steering column shroud attaching screws, then the steering column shroud.

Disconnect ignition switch electrical connector, Fig. 1, then rotate ignition key lock cylinder to ``Run'' position.

Remove switch to lock cylinder attaching screws.

Remove ignition switch from actuator pin.

Adjust ignition switch by sliding carrier to ``Run'' position. A new replacement switch assembly will be preset in ``Run'' position.

Place ignition key lock cylinder in ``Run'' position by rotating cylinder approximately 90掳from ``Lock'' position.

Install ignition switch on actuator pin. Slightly move switch back and forth to align mounting holes with column lock housing threaded holes.

Install switch to lock cylinder attaching bolts and torque bolts to 50-60 inch lbs.

    Connect switch electrical connector.

Install steering column trim shrouds, then check ignition for proper operation.1989 Thunderbird?
just start unscrewing all the paneling around the steering column, you'll eventually get to it, good luck :)1989 Thunderbird?
Not the easiest thing in the world to do. Tedious unscrewing all those little screws and removing the trim pieces to get to the switch.1989 Thunderbird?
Just pull the trim panels off from around it.You have to have the key in the switch. You'll see a hole in the aluminum with a steel pin up in it.Use a small punch or nail to push the steel pin farther in and pull the switch out.

How would I go about changing the relay for the ignition switch in my 1994 Cavalier. The key is stuck in the ignition, and the car will not run unless I hold the key to almost the start position. If I let it go back to the run position, it will die. I understand there is a drop in voltage from start to run, and the change is probably the problem. Anyone able to help me figure out how to fix it?Ignition resistor?
It may not be the ignition resistor... It may be the ignition switch itself. If your ignition resistor was bad the car wouldn't even start The reason I say this is cause a friend of mine had a 1994 Cavalier that did the same thing yours does. He changed his ignition resistor with no results. What it ended up being was the ignition switch. I would try that first. That is my opnion.

Help! Need info about 1994 dodge grand caravan, ignition problems.?

My grandmother has a 94 grand caravan that constantly shuts off when she is driving. Just compleatly dies on the highway. Then wont start again for at least 15 min if at all. I had a similar problem with a cavalier, and it was the ignition switch. I have told her this but the mechanic she had look at it keeps saying no its not. She has already paid out over $500 replacing the starter and other things and its back in the shop again. I want to know if anyone knows about ignition switches and how to change them, or if they think this is the problem. I think the mechanic is trying to take g-ma for money (which she doesn't have) Since i had the same problem and it worked for me.Help! Need info about 1994 dodge grand caravan, ignition problems.?
It sounds like the Ignition Control Module, but only a mechanic who is dumb as a brick wouldn't have tried that already. An ignition switch causing a problem like that is kind of rare, and not restarting for a period of time is even more so. If it is at highway speeds, he should be hooking up test equipment to test fuel, spark, and timing while on the highway to see where the cause is, or putting it on a dyno to see if he can recreate the problem in a closed environment. There is no other way to tell what is going on at highway speeds except putting it at highway speeds.Help! Need info about 1994 dodge grand caravan, ignition problems.?

The red wire from the engine should go to the ammeter if there is one and than to the soleniod. Same terminal that the battery is hooked to not the starter cable side.

Possibly go to a Honda dealer with the serial number (might ask for ownership to verify your not a thief), and see if they can make a set from the number (like they can for cars) or as you suggest yes a locksmith could do it. With the lock a locksmith will be able to determine the settings to cut a set of keys. Although I have a lock set that the locksmith could not make a key for. They tried for over two weeks to make a new key but were unsuccessful. So I had to order 4 new locks. I also have another vehicle that most locksmiths can not make a key for so again if I have to have a key made I'm out of luck besides going to a dealer at $100 per key.How to get replacement keys for motorcycle.?
Yes, any reasonably good locksmith could make a key. He might not have the right blank, though. You can probably buy blanks through your Honda dealer. Sometimes they are special and that's the only place you can get them. How to get replacement keys for motorcycle.?
You can probably get a key made, yeah - with an older bike, the only issue might be whether or not the locksmith keeps suitable blanks in stock. It might also be easier to get the locks altered to fit a new set of keys than to have new keys made to fit the locks - depends what sort of mechanism the locks have, a good locksmith should be able to advise you though. How to get replacement keys for motorcycle.?
You might want to check the price from a dealer, it might be cheaper than you think. I got a spare set for my 2000 Harley from the VIN, and it was only between 20 and 30 bucks for a set of two. (They didn 't sell them singly, only in sets of two) The local locksmiths here want more than that to impression a key, and you won't have to pull the lock. How to get replacement keys for motorcycle.?

How do you reprogram a car?

we have a saturn and changed the ignition switch and all the codes i guess was deleted can anyone help or is there a website i could go to the explains how to reprogram it?How do you reprogram a car?
I doubt you have to reprogram a module on this. Do you mean relearn the PASSLock system? Anyway, for $20 for 72hrs you can have Factory level information on how to relearn the system. It's a piece of cake. What is the car doing? Start run and die? Is the Theft lamp flashing? When you turn the key to Run it should illuminate for 3 seconds and then go out. Does it stay on or flash?

Rick J is wrong. Unplugging the battery will program NOTHING!

So, the engine cranks, but doesn't start and you threw an ignition switch at it?How do you reprogram a car?
What are you reprogramming? The engine will retain all of its programming unless you flashed the computer. If you did you have to go to the dealor. If you mean keyless entry, its also a dealor fix.How do you reprogram a car?
just unplug your battery for 10 to 30 minutes it will reprogram itself when u start it ( might be kinda sluggish when starting it but that normal let it run for about 10 minutes after u started it and it should be ok

My ignition does not turn on anything nor crank over engine, any ideas?

I have a '92 Chevy c1500, 350 5.7 litre engine. last week i tried to start it. turned the key to the start position, dash indicators, radio, heater and buzzer came on like normal. Went to crank over the engine and everything cut out. It normally costs $130 to tow it to the nearest technician shop ($65 there and back). Plus $65/hr for labor costs just to figure out the problem. Don't know how much for the parts they usually try to scam you into getting. So I have checked all connections from battery to starter to ignition switch. Checked all switches and fuses. Changed the starter, ignition switch and park/neutral switch. Battery works fine only a year old, and head lights including high beams, dome light and under-hood light all come on except there isn't a buzzer when I turn them on with ignition off. Normally there is a buzzer. most of my fiancee's family has worked on or with Chevy's and don't have a clue what it could be. I have even tried pushing up the shifter. Please help!My ignition does not turn on anything nor crank over engine, any ideas?
Does your solenoid click when you try to start it? If so, you have a poor connection, low battery or a bad solenoid. If you know your batteries pretty good, (try your horn) use a 12-volt test light to check for power to the small terminal on the starter solenoid, connecting the alligator clip to the battery negative terminal. If it lights up, change the solenoid. If not, work your way back through the circuit, and/or check for engine ground. (see Galen B's post) You can try the screwdriver jump across the terminals, just make sure the screwdriver doesn't touch any metal besides the small terminal while it's touching the main terminal, or it's 4th of July time. This is a lot safer when the starter is out of the car.My ignition does not turn on anything nor crank over engine, any ideas?
Check to see if you have a good ground. If that motor is not grounded, then that would be your problem. I went through hell to figure that out on my 80 K30. I wish I would have thought to check for a good ground first. Good luck.My ignition does not turn on anything nor crank over engine, any ideas?
99.9%starter or wires to itMy ignition does not turn on anything nor crank over engine, any ideas?
The battery may not have the amount of amps. you need to turn the starter Have the battery checked for cranking amps.to see if it could take the amps that the starter would need.My ignition does not turn on anything nor crank over engine, any ideas?
I had the sam thing happen to me and it was my coil which is mounted under the distributer cap if that is not it take out your module which is mounted under the dist. cap and autozone or oreillys will check it for free.My ignition does not turn on anything nor crank over engine, any ideas?
You didn't mention the ground cable. Run a booster cable from the negative side of the battery to the engine block and try again. If that works, you are not getting the ground from the battery.

You should also be able to jumper a screwdriver across the starter from where the positive wire connects to the starter to where the ignition wire connects to the starter. This will bypass the ignition switch. If this starts it, the problem is in the ignition circuit. I don't know if there is a relay in the ignition line.My ignition does not turn on anything nor crank over engine, any ideas?
Galen B has got your answer. Just don't stand directly in front of the vehicle when you do this and keep you hand OFF the metal part of the screwdriver.

I have a 1988 pontiac 6000 and need to change the ignition switch. I have an important dinner to attend with a grade school friend who will be moving out of state. Disconnect the battery.

there should be two screws on the housing behind the steering wheel. remove those two screws. The lock cylinder should be held by a few mounting screws. Remove those. Do not move the steering wheel in this process. Behind the lock cylinder, you should find the ignition switch. Remove the old switch, replace with the new one, and reinstall the lock cylinder. Put the housing back into place, and you are done.In help in the next 1/2 hour if anyone is out there.?

How do i take a ignition switch out of a 2000 dodge stratus?

dose it need to be in the run position? i have it taken apart but cant get it out the column, there seems to be a button on the bottom but it dosent go completely in do i put it in the run position to do this. also what if the key is stuck? yeah im trying to change the key out. any experts out there or anyone with experience, with this. or any car similar to this. help plz. thanks. How do i take a ignition switch out of a 2000 dodge stratus?
It has to be in the run position to remove. That's pretty common problem on the 98+ Chrysler's/Dodge.

If the key's not turning spray it down real good I use PB Blaster works real good. Then just insert the key and tap the head with something. Don't get real caveman with it just tap it softly and reinsert the key a few times. It should rotate. If it does not put the key in and only with the key in grip the very outer edge of the cylinder face with a small pair of channel lock pliers. Then rotate the cylinder to run with the key in it should turn with very little effort.

In general there's nothing really wrong with these locks they just get a bunch of dirt in the first 3 wafers causing the sidebar not to drop down. This prevents the cylinder from turning. once you get the lock on there's a square retainer on the bottom of the lock housing, may be on the back. When turned to run push the retainer in and the lock can be pulled out. How do i take a ignition switch out of a 2000 dodge stratus?
try turning it it back to accessory or run position they,ll usually come out either way,but i think its accessory position on those, good luck. How do i take a ignition switch out of a 2000 dodge stratus?
take your steering column cover off and there will be some bolts holding it on unhook the wire and pull the bolts unless it is in the dash the you got to pull the cover at the bottom of the dash and your column cover to get to the ignition after you pull the ignition. they switched over to that setup because ti is easier than pulling the steering wheel to get to it.if my answer doesn't help get a manuel from the parts hose of your Choice and look it up it should be more helpful than what i told you. my suggestion for a parts house is either advance or auto zone.

How to repair the ignition switch connector?

my car had a problem . the ignition switch is burned and the connector burn up too , the question is how to change or repair that connector because the wires are damaged also .

    my car is NB 2000.

thank you for all of your answersHow to repair the ignition switch connector?
Do you have the steering column apart yet? Is it the connector from the dashboard wiring harness that is burned up? If it is, your best, and least expensive, solution is to go to a junk yard and clip the same connector from a similar vehicle. Make sure you leave yourself plenty of wire behind the connector so you have adequate length to strip and solder the new connector to your wiring harness. If you are unable to find a connector at a junk yard, you may be able to buy a new connector plug and the corresponding wire ends to put in the connector at your local dealership. However, not all manufacturers do this--they may tell you that you have to buy a new wiring harness for the instrument panel. This would be you LAST RESORT!!! Replacing the harness for the dashboard usually entails taking out he dash and unplugging all electrical devices contained in it and then re-installing the harness and dash. This is A LOT of work, and the average back yard mechanic doesn't have the tools, training or know-how to do this kind of major repair. If you have a shop do this for you it will be very expensive; the harness itself will not be cheap and it is a very labor-intensive job. I hope this helps. If you have any other questions, let me know. How to repair the ignition switch connector?
Some dealers sell repair kits..as in the hardshell connector with a few inches of wire hanging out. If not, hope that a scrapyard will sell you just the part of the harness you need. If all else fails..you can get some female spade connectors and plug them into the ign switch, then silicone them into place so they won't short together. Not the right way....but ye do what ye must!

Ok the switch is mounted on the bottom of the stearing column. If you are talking about the key lock you have to remove the steering wheel.

    If it has an air bag , disconnect the battery, Then wait 10 minets befor removing the air bag. BE VERRY CARFULL NOT TO JAR IT OR BANG ON IT%26gt;

Take off the nut that holds the wheel, next get a steering wheel puller and the tool to remove the anti theft ring. next remove the turning sig switch and the bolt holding the key lock.

Now pull the lock free and install the new one.

How do I remove the ignition switch in a 1998 chevrolet cavalier?

Car was totalled. Have to remove and change the ignition in my car. I need istructions on how to do this. How do I remove the ignition switch in a 1998 chevrolet cavalier?
There are two switches. The key lock cylinder and actual switch 180 degrees to the left of that, on the left side of the steering column. You need a special tool to remove the switch.

First, remove the steering column cover with 3 bolts at the bottom, facing the floor. Remove tilt lever if equipped. Now insert the key, turn to on position. From the instrument cluster side, insert a small screw driver or tiny punch to push in the retainer, like a door knob bolt in a house, and pull the cylinder out.

Unplug only one electrical connector for the cylinder, or two for the switch. Do not touch yellow wires or any airbag components, though they might have inflated, still be careful, you didn't say, and they keep a minimal amount of power even with a smashed battery.

Ok im trying to change my in column ignition switch?

The retainer which I think you're referring to is a theft deterrent which prevents a thief from using a screwdriver to start the vehicle if he removes the lock cylinder with a slide hammer or similar device.

The key and cylinder must be in the on position to align the end of the actuator shaft with the slot in the inside of the actual switch to remove it properly.

You must now remove this piece and the end of the shaft will be easily removed. You can then either reinstall it or discard it as it serves no other purpose other than as a theft deterrent.

    Beetle Ignition switch issues?

Hey! I have a 1976 bug, that is having some issues staying started. I have a shop manual for it,but it isn't very explanatory on how to change the ignition switch,It wants me to take the steering wheel and column out(the skill and tools to do this I probably don't have) and my mechanic wants me to bring it in and pay 300 bucks to have a new one installed. I can still get the aux power on by turning the key,but turning it all the way to crank the engine is another story,it comes on after a few tries, and going down the road will spontaneously die until I tap the key back into place. I am wanting to know if anybody can tell me how to maybe bypass the switch, and re route it to a toggle or push button start! Also I have heard a rumor about being able to use a Ford solenoid to get power from the battery straight to the starter motor...is this true? And if anyone knows of a better shop manual to use.Beetle Ignition switch issues?
careful w a derill if you drill too deep you will be looking for the whole part that holds the switch. There sshould be a little hole to put a paper clip sized wire into to release the swith. After disconnecting the back of the switch and the battery. Check out one of many books to see how its done. takes some jiggling. best bet is to find some old airhead to do it for about 10-20 bucks and 2 minutes.Beetle Ignition switch issues?
you really don't need no special tools to do this one with, you can use a drill to drill out the old break off bolts that hold the switch on and they give you new ones with the new switch,i use to own one of those cars and if you got some good hand tools you,ll be able to swap the switches out on that car,the one thing you don't want to do is try and by pass it,that can cause the main switch to short out, just buy the new one and install it,its not as hard as most mechanics make it out to be,good luck.

There are a couple of things that you can do.....

    1. Go to your public library and they will have this.

    2. Go to any auto parts store and they can print this.

    3. Call the dealer and they can either print it for you or fax it to you.

    Ignition Switch installation on a 1998 Chevy s10 Pick-up?

On a previous question, I am being told that I should change out the ignition switch on my 1998 S10 Pick-up truck. Does anyone have instructions with pictures and diagrams as to how to go about doing this? I'am somewhat handy mechanically, but any additional help I can get would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.Ignition Switch installation on a 1998 Chevy s10 Pick-up?
I dont know of any place to go, mostly because its not a newer vehicle. Its not that bad. Start ripping and tearing! Just keep track and maybe even take pictures yourself in the process.Ignition Switch installation on a 1998 Chevy s10 Pick-up?
if its just the ignition switch ,that's mounted on the lower steering column and isn't too bad to change ,it also has to be adjusted though once its installed for it to work right,if its the actual key part you have to disassemble the steering column to get to it,and that's a pretty hard job to do on a Chevy, and does require a few specialty tools, good luck with it.

How do you replace a 1990 Accord Ignition Switch?

My car starts up then dies in a second or 2. The mechanic tells me it's a bad ignition switch and tumbler that need to be replaced. I would suggest going to a parts store such as: Auto Value, CarQuest, or NAPA in order to get a repair manual for your car. Usually these places carry Haynes manuals. They are pretty helpful in repairing carsHow do you replace a 1990 Accord Ignition Switch?
I would check the Ignition pig tail. That's what it sound like.. It's not the switch.. It's the wire after the ignition switch. Got to any part store and ask for the Ignition pig tail.. To change that wire. all you have to do is take out the colum cover. There's 2 phil. screw after the ignition switch.

Thank you everyone that responded to my %26quot;how to replace ignition switch%26quot; question. Now I am trying to figure out what else I need to replace on it so it can run again. Do you get a clicking sound when you go to the start position? My chevy blazer has no power changed out ignition switch, still not working. What could it be?
Sounds like your charging system or fuel pump failed. Try blowing your horn. No horn indicates your battery is dead. And if it stalled while you were driving, your altenator might be bad or may have lost it's drive belt.

Have that checked as soon as possible.

Does anyone know how to change a Saturn SL ignition switch?

is this sl 2? if yes your promblem could be in trans selector on floor there is a cable to back of switch try back and forth on shift handle in park switch is pain you need to turn to acc to undo cover and tumblers and special tool for bolts and cable haines manual has good instruction try cable first took of on mine now work okDoes anyone know how to change a Saturn SL ignition switch?
The first thing to do after checking the above (the shift lock cable) is to go to your dealer with the vehicle's VIN and have them cut you a new key. It only costs about 8 dollars, and will sometimes solve this problem. Saturn keys are made of brass, and wear out over time to the point that they will not turn in the lock cylinder. Do NOT try to go to a key shop and get the one you have copied, as it will only be a copy of a bad key. If a new key doesn't work, it is possible you will have to replace the lock cylinder, which in my opinion is best left to professionals. The cylinder must be assembled to the specs of your particular car, and although the installation isn't difficult, it helps to have a warranty on parts and labor in case something goes wrong. Hope this helps and good luck!

  • How do I go about changing the ignition switch on a 1989 Grand Prix with a tilt steering column?

Okay what i have done, pulled the steering wheel, removed the cancel camremoved the plastic cover and the turn signal switch. Pulled the pivot pins and removed the bolt in the pinch clamp at the end of the steering shaft. The directions say to just remove the shaft assembly and housing then do some other stuff. My only problem is i cant remove it and therefore cant move on. There are two half inch bolts that connect the steering column to the dash which ive removed they did nothing also removed two bolts close to the fire wall which together the 4 bolts allowed the entire column to drop down to the floor but would not allow to shaft to come out.How do I go about changing the ignition switch on a 1989 Grand Prix with a tilt steering column?
There should be a pin under the cylinder housing (or a screw, not sure) that needs to be removed(or pushed in, not sure) with the key in the %26quot;on%26quot; position. The cylinder will now wiggle its way out.How do I go about changing the ignition switch on a 1989 Grand Prix with a tilt steering column?
Sounds like you have it loose enough if it's down on the floor. I did mine with it resting on the seat giving me about 6 inches to work. Get out the little mag light and your stubby screwdriver and go for it. There might be some goop where it goes through the firewall to seal it. Maybe thats holding it.. Make sure it's not a wiring harness you're yankin on!

How do you remove or change the ignition switch lock cylinder on a 1993 Ford Mustang LX 5.0?

Please help.. I have 12.6 volts at the wire harness going to the ignition switch (behind the steering column). I have traced all hot wires from the positive side of the solenode switch (including the fusible links) and they are all good. I have replaced the solenode, battery, starter and ignition switch. Whenever I turn the key cylinder over, I lose all voltage. I was told that it would possibly be a shorted key cylinder? has anyone heard of this problem? Could a faulty ignition key cylinder cause this?? Please advise how to replace the cylinder and also advise if a bad/faulty/shorted ignition kiey cylinder can cause this type of problem. How do you remove or change the ignition switch lock cylinder on a 1993 Ford Mustang LX 5.0?
to remove the key cyl remove steering wheel column covers turn key to ACC and locate a hole on bottom side of cylinder use a small punch or nail and push lock pin and pull cyl with key out. key cylinder has no purpose but to turn the electrical ign switch if you still think its the key cyl remove it and turn the elctrical ign switch with a screwdriver and see if you still have the same problem! if you do thanits not the key cyl. Ig i were you i'd get the battery load tested just because its got 12.6v it might not have enough cranking AMPs due to a dead cellHow do you remove or change the ignition switch lock cylinder on a 1993 Ford Mustang LX 5.0?
Make sure your battery connection is tight. That will cause the same problemHow do you remove or change the ignition switch lock cylinder on a 1993 Ford Mustang LX 5.0?
The key cylinder has no voltage associated with it. The cylinder is just a mechanical device the electrical part of the ignition is on top of the steering column. If you want to remove the cylinder place the key in the 'on' position and push the small button underneath the cylinder and it will come out.

Should I change the ignition switch on my 93 nissan sentra?

    GA16DE engine.

    Dual cams.

    4door

    1.6L

It started absolutely fine this morning when I went to the bank for a second, but when I came back and then got ready to go to work, all I got was a single click. I put it in neutral to see if it would start, but once again, nothing but the single click. Decided it might be the battery, but cell levels are fine and windshield wipers run at normal pace as well as car windows go up and down without problem. What do you guys think? I'm really itching to just change the ignition switch but it could be the neutral safety switch(although this wouldn't stop it from starting in neutral, unless I'm mistaken about how it works). Would like a second opinion on this madness so I can bring some method to it.Should I change the ignition switch on my 93 nissan sentra?
i would suspect the stater or solenoid. electrical accessories do not require as much amperage as the starter.Should I change the ignition switch on my 93 nissan sentra?
do this first ,take a 12 volt test light and have someone try and start the vehicle, see if thers any voltage getting to the starter solenoid,if you have voltage their its not the switch,to change the ignition switch you have to take apart the plastic covers that are over it and drill out the two blind screws that hold it in,i changed mine because it went bad,it takes about an hour to change one out,but id check for voltage at the strater first, then go from there with it,theres also a starter relay on those that will cause problems, that may be the click your hearing on it,check that also, they do cause some problems sometimes, good luck on it.

Are you referring to the electrical switch portion or the mechanical

lock (where you insert the key)?

Assuming it is the electrical part that you want to replace:

    a) remove the lower left dashboard cover

    b) if possible extend the steering column backwards and lower

    c) remove the lower steering cover/lower trim panel which covers the ignition switch area (held by 1 plastic screw)

    d) detach the various connectors that blocks the way to the switch, or at least cut the tie straps bunching the wires together)

e)remove the 2 tiny screws (with no heads) which are covered/hidden by wax or epoxy that holds the switch

    f) remove switch and replace

How to change out ignition switch on 1984 F150 Ext cab truck?

I am somewhat mechanically challenged but have only the old truck to satisfy daily travel needs and get my six yearold to and from school. Ignition switch began sticking in %26quot;starter engage%26quot; position closely followed by current state: Insert key and rotate forward and the thing just keeps going forward never engaging starter and won't turn vehicle power off when moving back to %26quot;column lock%26quot; position. I just need to know the steps to remove old switch and replace with new one. Can NE one help me out please? Thanks KevinHow to change out ignition switch on 1984 F150 Ext cab truck?
Kevin, the ignition tumbler/key when rotated has a small rod that runs down the top of the column. The switch it self is down near your feet on top of the steering column. Check to make sure the switch is working properly. The tumbler/key assembly is a little more difficult to change. You have to remove, on most vehicles the steering wheel to gain access. Go on e-bay and find a service manual or go on line with auto-zone. You can join their tech service for cheap money to find the help you need. Good luck.

    1992-94 Models

    Disconnect the negative battery cable.

    Lower the steering column.

Remove the washer head screw and the hexagon nut.

Disconnect the dimmer switch assembly from the rod.

Unfasten the dimmer and ignition switch mounting stud.

Seperate the ignition switch from the actuator rod.

Unplug the ignition switch electrical connection and remove the switch.

    To install:

The new ignition switch will come in the OFF-LOCK position. Once the switch is assembled on the column, remove the plastic pin from the switch. If you are installing the old switch, make sure it is in the OFF-LOCK position.

Attach the switch to the actuator rod.

Move the switch slider to the extreme left position, then move the slider one detent right to the OFF-LOCK position. Install the dimmer switch mounting stud and tighten to 35 inch lbs. (4 Nm).

Attach the dimmer switch to the rod, then install the washer head screw and hexagon nut. Do not fully tighten at this time.

Place a 3/32 inch drill bit in the hole on the dimmer switch. Position the switch on the column and push against the rod to eliminate all lash.

Install the switch and tighten the screw and nut to 35 inch lbs. (4 Nm).

    Attach the switch electrical connection.

Raise and attach the steering column.

Connect the negative battery cable and check for proper switch operationHow do i change the ignition switch in my 92%26039; chevy cheyenne 1500.?
I think most lock smiths can fix it for you if you have any in your area or you can buy a manual for your truck,it should help you fix it also. How do i change the ignition switch in my 92%26039; chevy cheyenne 1500.?
buy a new ignition cylinder for the truck, dealer will have them, you might be able to get one from the parts store, but I'm not sure on that one.

You will need to remove the steering wheel to do it, and you will need to use a steering wheel puller to do it.

Disconnect the battery. Pull on the horn button then disassemble the horn button hardware inside, note how it is. Remove the large nut in the middle that holds the steering wheel. Then screw the two bolts in to the steering wheel that came with the puller, take note of the position of the steering wheel (turn it so that it is straight so that you put it on in the right position, better yet scratch the wheel and the shaft then just line up your marks) then use the puller to pull the wheel off of the shaft.

After that, remove the steering column cover (sorry haven't done it on an earlier model GM) but I do know that the steering wheel needs to be removed. It really shouldn't be a hard process at all. You could always go and buy a Haynes or Chiltons book on the 88-98 GM trucks, it has step by step instructions on how to do it.

    Good luck

You will have to drill them out. It is the cheapest and easiest way. They aren't like screws where you can take them out when you need. They are designed to be permanent. If you plan to rivet the new switch on, you will need a rivet gun with an air compressor. Depending on how many rivet you are putting in, if any, you can buy rivets that don't need the gun and can be put in by hand ( you may need a hammer).92 suzuki swift how do i get the revets out to change my ignition switch?

I would assume you need to pull your steering wheel (get that kit at autozone with a free deposit. Then you will have to pull your dashboard out well the dash board part that is covering the key. That will get you to all the components you need to see. Then look at it and say okay this is how I remove it and this is my replacement. If its in your steering column you will see everything. Pull the steering wheel first, the bolts are on the back of it. You might not even need to do this. But you have to pull off everything that shows what you are looking at. Normally the steering wheel has to go.

Or you could just call one of the 1 million Pontiac dealers in the world and ask for service and ask them.

I think my idea is best because I think you will have to do both either way. Look at the switch you just bought and take the old one out and replace it with the new one. You will be able to see it.

There's a small hole at the bottom of the cylinder and key, put the switch on on, stick a punch or test light in the hole and at the same time turn the switch slowly more to start and pull it out at the same time. How to change a ignition switch on a 1990 Ford F-150 xlt lariat 5.0 engine truck with cruise?
ok i have that same truck with the inline 4.6 six and it is easy there are 5 holes on the underside of your steering column the hole that is not for a screw is the one you need (its easier to pull the cover the first time) pull the cover with four screws then there is a little hole in your ignition box put your key in it turn to the %26quot;run%26quot; posistion then insert a 1/8 punch or drill bit works the non cutting side then push the ball release and pull on the box it could take a little on a 1990 just due to build up and corrosion but it will come out in wisconsin at farm and fleet the box was 12.99 so good luck

I have a new key and complete assembly. I need to know the %26quot;trick%26quot;of how to remove the old one.How do I change the ignition switch on my 77 Blazer?
The key usually has to be in acc or run position then there is a small pin you push to release the cylinder. It can usually be accessed from a small hole on the bottom of the column. You should see the round pin on the new cylinder, that will give a idea of where to look and what size tool to use.

How do you change an ignition switch?

I have a 79 buick regal and I need to change the ignition switch. it has no small hole around it to put a paper clip in and pull out. Detailed instructions pleaseHow do you change an ignition switch?
assuming is the lock cylinder you need to replace it goes like this:

    (1) remove horn switch pad-bolts thru back of steering wheel

(2)carefully lift pad from wheel--dont pull the wire-grasp white conector push slightly and turn counterclockwise and it should pull free

    (3) remove center wheel nut

    (4) if you dont have acess to a wheel puller get an assistant, grasp wheel @ 3%26amp;9 oclock and with a wood block against threads(dont hit threads with out a block or you will never get nut back on)hit block with hammer while pulling the wheel

(5)the next part is the wheel lock,it is spring loaded,as you sit in car using thumbs you can depress it and assistant can pry small circlip that retains it(dont lose clip!!) and lift out of the way

    (6) remove 3 screws that hold turn signal switch there should be just enough wire slack to lift over steering stem and out of way

    (7) at approx 2 oclck position inside the cavity you should see a white clip with a copper colored contact that partially covers an Torx screw, try to remove screw without pulling the white clip out(this is part of keys in switch buzzer,if you dont like buzzer pull and discard the clip%26amp; contact, otherwise try to keep in place because is a pain to put back in!!!!)

(8)Key tumbler should pull out of column, compare new part to be sure is same and reverse disassembly steps to get it togetherHow do you change an ignition switch?
The switch or the lock cylinder?

The switch is on the steering column near the bottom its actuated by a rod from the lock cylinder.

To remove the cylinder you need to pull the steering wheel there is a bolt with a torx head that holds the lock cylinder in place. Remove the bolt and pull out the lock cylinder. How do you change an ignition switch?
I am going to assume you mean the ignition lock cylinder.

Your Regal probrably has a Saganaw column.

You will need to remove the steering wheel (you need a puller to pull the wheel off the spline). then you will need to compress the steel plate to pull the snap ring holding it in place. You will then be into the column. There will be a screw holding to cylinder in place (torx). remove the screw and pull the cylinder out, be careful as the gear and sping set up on the inside end of the cylinder will want to come out. Put the new cylinder in place and be sure the tooth on the gear is aligned properly. Secure the cylinder and put the column back together using the pree to put the plate and snap ring back in. The steering wheel can be pressed onto the column with it's nut. If you need to chance the ignition switch itself it is located down the column. I believe it is attatched with 2 screws and actuated by the rod controled by the gear.

How do I change the ignition switch on a 1997 chevy blazer?

I need to change the ignition and I'm told that I need to remove the steering wheel. I have the tools to remove the steering wheel, but I don't know how to take the cover off of the steering wheel. Also, I'm a bit lost on the rest of the process. Can somebody help? How do I change the ignition switch on a 1997 chevy blazer?
I own a shop, and if you are trying to remove the steering wheel to change the ignition switch, then you may not have to. The switch is on the steering column about 1/2 down towards the floor, and has a rod that runs from the key cylinder %26amp; locking part. As some of the other answers state, %26quot;IF you don't know how to deal with the air bag, then take it to someone who does%26quot; as these things can take your head right off your body if you are close to it when it goes off. You shouldn't have to remove the steering wheel, but if you do; I strongly suggest you get some help. The best place to get help with this would be a paint %26amp; body shop. They deal with them all the time, and can direct you in the proper direction to do it safely.

Glad to help out, Good luck!!!How do I change the ignition switch on a 1997 chevy blazer?
If you dont know the procedure for disabling the air bag, you'd better not try to do it.How do I change the ignition switch on a 1997 chevy blazer?
You may have to disable the air bag too if it has one, try behind the wheel there should be screws to take the cover off.
