After u compress the steering wheel lock- remove the C ring that holds the steering wheel lock. There is a special compressor that u might need if u %26amp; another person can't compress the lock plate..IT either has a phillips screw that holds it in or a TAB on the new Key %26amp; Tumbler that has 2 b held in 2 remove %26amp; reinstall. The ign. switch is on the top of the steering column, just behind the dash..A rod from the Tumbler works the Ign. switch. How do i change the ignition switch in my 92%26039; chevy cheyenne 1500.?
1992-94 Models

Disconnect the negative battery cable.

Lower the steering column.

Remove the washer head screw and the hexagon nut.

Disconnect the dimmer switch assembly from the rod.

Unfasten the dimmer and ignition switch mounting stud.

Seperate the ignition switch from the actuator rod.

Unplug the ignition switch electrical connection and remove the switch.

To install:

The new ignition switch will come in the OFF-LOCK position. Once the switch is assembled on the column, remove the plastic pin from the switch. If you are installing the old switch, make sure it is in the OFF-LOCK position.

Attach the switch to the actuator rod.

Move the switch slider to the extreme left position, then move the slider one detent right to the OFF-LOCK position. Install the dimmer switch mounting stud and tighten to 35 inch lbs. (4 Nm).

Attach the dimmer switch to the rod, then install the washer head screw and hexagon nut. Do not fully tighten at this time.

Place a 3/32 inch drill bit in the hole on the dimmer switch. Position the switch on the column and push against the rod to eliminate all lash.

Install the switch and tighten the screw and nut to 35 inch lbs. (4 Nm).

Attach the switch electrical connection.

Raise and attach the steering column.

Connect the negative battery cable and check for proper switch operationHow do i change the ignition switch in my 92%26039; chevy cheyenne 1500.?
I think most lock smiths can fix it for you if you have any in your area or you can buy a manual for your truck,it should help you fix it also. How do i change the ignition switch in my 92%26039; chevy cheyenne 1500.?
buy a new ignition cylinder for the truck, dealer will have them, you might be able to get one from the parts store, but I'm not sure on that one.

You will need to remove the steering wheel to do it, and you will need to use a steering wheel puller to do it.

Disconnect the battery. Pull on the horn button then disassemble the horn button hardware inside, note how it is. Remove the large nut in the middle that holds the steering wheel. Then screw the two bolts in to the steering wheel that came with the puller, take note of the position of the steering wheel (turn it so that it is straight so that you put it on in the right position, better yet scratch the wheel and the shaft then just line up your marks) then use the puller to pull the wheel off of the shaft.

After that, remove the steering column cover (sorry haven't done it on an earlier model GM) but I do know that the steering wheel needs to be removed. It really shouldn't be a hard process at all. You could always go and buy a Haynes or Chiltons book on the 88-98 GM trucks, it has step by step instructions on how to do it.

Good luck
